Why Are There So Many Languages

This episode drops Tuesday, October 6.

Description

In Episode 6, we tackle a question every bilingual kid has probably wondered about: 为什么有这么多语言?Why Are There So Many Languages?

Together, we discover how language grew differently in different parts of the world, why people just a mountain or an ocean apart ended up speaking so differently, and what it means that your own bilingual brain is doing something pretty extraordinary.

Along the way, we practice five key vocabulary words in context, with sentences your child can use right away:

语言 yǔ yán (language)
村子 cūn zi (village)
岛 dǎo (island)
隔开 gé kāi (to separate)
翻译 fān yì (to translate)

Perfect for little listeners aged 5–8.

Discussion

Keep the conversation going after the episode. Here are a few questions to ask your little one.

  1. What's something you can say in Mandarin that feels a little different when you say it in English?

  2. If you had to invent a brand new word for something that doesn't have a name yet, what would it be for, and what would you call it?

  3. If you and your best friend spoke completely different languages, what's one way you could still show them how you feel?
